Committee Description

Since 1998, over 5.4 million people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have died, whether directly or indirectly, in the Second Congo War of 1998-2003. Also known as "Africa's World War," it was the widest interstate war on the African continent and the worst conflict since World War II. Though the war is officially over, turmoil continues as rebel and government forces battle in the East. The violence and consequent destruction of the infrastructure have led to a massive humanitarian crisis with shocking human rights violations. Given the urgent and volatile nature of the current situation, neighboring countries as well as those far away have agreed to meet in an emergency summit to discuss the Congo's future. Delegates will be faced with a wide variety of serious issues ranging from Rwandan genocidaires lurking in the mountains to the dangers of smuggling uranium. They must work to return normalcy to the lives of the country's civilians; otherwise, they risk destabilization and another continental war.
