Committee Description
The San Remo Conference of 1920 is a juncture where nationalism, empire, business interests, and principles of self-determination collide. The victors of World War I are meeting behind closed doors in San Remo, Italy to decide the fate of the fallen Ottoman Empire, dividing up the land into various League of Nation mandates. In this Mandate System, the great powers have promised Arab states eventual freedom while concurrently promising the Jews a nation-state with the 1917 Balfour Declaration. But with British, French, and Italian colonial interests at play and oil corporations' opportunities for expansion, the self-determination of Arab nations as well as the possibility for a Jewish homeland are in danger of being put on the back burner. As a delegate of the American, Japanese, British, French, Italian, or oil corporation delegations, you must reconcile various strong conflicting forces: Pan-Arab nationalism, economic self-interest, and Zionism. The fate of the modern Middle East is at stake.
