Committee Description

Convened on January 17th, 1946, the United Nations Security Council is arguably the most powerful committee in the United Nations. Charged with the maintenance of international peace and security, the Security Council, unlike any other UN committee, has the power to execute peacekeeping operations, establish international sanctions, and undertake military action under extreme circumstances. In the past 60 years, the United Nations Security Council has played an integral role in diffusing some of the most dangerous and hostile conflicts in the world. Today, the United Nations Security Council still deals extensively with contemporary political problems including, but not limited to, the threat of the emergence of a nuclear Iran and Russia's recent incursion into the sovereign state of Georgia. Delegates should develop some familiarity with these events and come prepared to take on these real world topics.
