Committee Description
Under the United Nations Charter, the Security Council is charged with "the establishment and maintenance of international peace and security". Formed in 1945 following the end of the Second World War, the currently fifteen-member organ has grown to become one of the most influential bodies in international relations. At this year's session, the Council will focus on the situations in Somalia and Myanmar. In Somalia, the lack of a centralized government and presence of various de facto autonomous regions has engendered widespread political instability and an ongoing civil war, raising concern throughout the international community. Across the Indian Ocean, similar concern was raised following the 2007 Burmese anti-government protests and the subsequent human rights violations and emergence of political refugees. In producing effective and innovative solutions, delegates will be required to reconcile the need for cooperation with the desire to address their states' personal interests.
